'Intense... each one of these strips is a marvel to behold. Trembles is a man who is not afraid to flaunt his obsessions.
- Peter Bagge, SPIDERMAN (Marvel Comics)
A novel new form of film criticism, the medium of sequential art lends itself extremely well to the dissection of motion pictures; illustrations frequently resemble storyboards and plotline trajectories are literally tracked diagrammatically with Rick Trembles' unique brand of representation. MOTION PICTURE PURGATORY is somewhat satirical, over-the-top, and delivered with an obsessive attention to detail that only enhances each review's uniqueness and the opinionated, subjective nature of Trembles' commentaries.
'Comic strips and films are unique art forms that were invented at the same time. Both tell stories with images and words. There has been a lot of back and forth between them - many comic strips have inspired movies (Flash Gordon, Dick Tracy, Spiderman, etc.) while great film directors such as Truffaut and Fellini got their start directing fumettis (photo comics). MAD magazine's finest moments were its film parodies. Rick Trembles' work fits right in there. His 'Motion Picture Purgatory' comic strips are the first-ever regularly published comic strip movie reviews. This makes perfect sense, really. You learn a lot more about the movies from his comics than you would from an Ebert & Roeper TV show or a NY Times review.
- John Holmstrom, creator of 'Punk magazine' (the first of its kind) and illustrator of several early Ramones albums.
